Traditional Alentejo music
The Palace of Belém was opened to the public on 25 April, to visit the gardens of the President of the Republic and watch the performance of Alentejo Chant by several choral groups, within the programme of the celebrations of Freedom Day.
These were staged in the Patio dos Bichos with enactments by the Juvenile Choral Group “The Nightingales”, from Damaia, by the Ethnographic and Combined Choral Group “Soul of the Alentejo”, from Peroguarda, by the Feminine Choral Group “ March Roses” (both from Ferreira do Alentejo) and later, singing in unison, the Choral and Ethnographic Group of the Serpa People’s Home, the Aldeia Nova de S. Bento Choral Group and the Choral and Ethnographic Group “The Peasants of Pias” (both of these from Serpa as well).
Ending the performance all the groups simultaneously sang an Alentejo chant.
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva attended the presentation of the Alentejo Chant.
