The President of the Republic decorated the Naval Training Ship “Sagres”, on the occasion of her 50 years in the Navy’s service, and bade farewell to the ship’s complement of the frigate “Corte Real”, who are departing on a mission to combat piracy in the Indian Ocean.
Accompanied by the Minister of National Defence, by the Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff and by the Chief of the Naval General Staff, President Anibal Cavaco Silva decorated N.R.P. “Sagres” with the degree of Honorary Member of the Military Order of Christ. The training ship was docked at the Lisbon Naval Base, in Alfeite.
The President stressed, on the occasion, that the ship “Sagres” is a symbol of the fascination of the Portuguese for the sea and of our spirit of adventure and discovery, and that she is still an active member of our diplomacy, often visits our countrymen in the Diaspora and carries Portuguese culture to the four corners of the world.
After this ceremony, the President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces visited N.R.P. “Corte Real”, also docked at the Lisbon Naval Base, on board which he bade farewell to the ship’s complement and military detachment and wished them success in their mission to combat piracy.
In the words addressed to the crew of the Frigate “Corte Real”, the President underlined the excellent performance of our Armed Forces on external missions, contributing towards international peace and security, and the prestige they have gained with our partners and allies.
