The President of the Republic is travelling to Finland, between 8 and 11 February instant, at the invitation of the Finnish President, Tarja Halonen, to take part in the annual meeting of the Heads of State of the Arraiolos Group, which will be held on 10 and 11 February.
The Heads of State will analyse the current situation in Europe and its implications on the role of the European Union in the world, as well as the events in the southern Mediterranean countries, and the stance of the European Union regarding the defence of tolerance and the fight against discrimination.
The President of the Republic’s stay in Finland also includes a bilateral event on 9 February. In the morning the Head of State will visit the headquarters of Nokia-Siemens and of Nokia International, after which he will be hosted for lunch by the Executive Vice-President and former Prime Minster of Finland, Esko Aho, and by Armando Almeida, a member of the Executive Board of Nokia-Siemens. In the afternoon a meeting will be held with the officers of the Finnish agency for trade and investment, where a presentation will take place on the setting up and management, in that country, of a maritime cluster and a nano-technological cluster, followed by a visit to a nano-technological research laboratory and to a Finnish company carrying out business activities in this area.
With this bilateral component, it is the intention of President Aníbal Cavaco Silva to highlight the fact that Portugal is a privileged investment destination for Finnish companies, in the field of high technology, with Nokia-Siemens, and to contribute towards establishing a closer cooperation between Portugal and Finland in the areas of maritime economy and of nanotechnology.
The Head of State will be accompanied by Mrs. Cavaco Silva, as well as by the Secretary of State for the Sea, by the President of AICEP, by the President of the Association for Knowledge and Economy of the Sea – Oceanus XXI and by the Vice President of the Lisbon Commercial Association, two civil society institutions that have been contributing towards the setting up of the Portuguese maritime cluster, and also by the Director General of the Iberian International Nanotechnology Laboratory, with headquarters in Braga, and by the Vice Chancellor for Research of Minho University.
