The President of the Republic is travelling to the United States of America from 9 to 14 November next, accompanied by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs and by the Secretaries of State for Entrepreneurial Activities, Competitiveness and Innovation, and for the Portuguese Communities.
The visit will begin in New York, where President Anibal Cavaco Silva will preside at a special session of the United Nations Security Council, on 9 November, thus earmarking the beginning of Portugal’s mandate at the head of that body during the month of November. During his stay in New York the Head of State will contact the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mister Ban Ki-moon, as well as the Permanent Representatives of the Member Countries of the Security Council.
Following this, and complying with the commitment he assumed for an annual visit to the Portuguese communities abroad, the President of the Republic will attend, on 12 November, the annual meeting of the Portuguese American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS), which will take place in Washington, and will take part in the second meeting of elected North American citizens of Portuguese origin, after which he will visit the Portuguese community in the West Coast of the United States, on 13 and 14 November.
Taking advantage of his trip to California, President Cavaco Silva will go to Silicon Valley, for a series of contacts to promote the Country with companies and support centres for the setting up of companies, and to deliver a speech at Stanford University. On that same day, the global entrepreneurial week will begin, a worldwide annual initiative, whose activities, in Portugal, have always had the sponsorship of the Head of State and whose programme, this year, will close with an event named “Silicon Valley comes to Lisbon”.
