Arrival at Belém
Within the programme of the Celebrations of the 101st Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic, the President of the Republic attended several of the planned shows and concerts, all of which were freely accessible to the public, in the Palace of Belém, the gates of which remained open during the whole day.
In the morning, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva viewed part of the performance of the Public Security Police Symphony Orchestra, which played for the public visiting the Palace, in the Garden of the Waterfall.
In the afternoon, after having attended, from the Palace veranda, the Solemn Changing of the Guard, President and Mrs. Maria Cavaco Silva walked round the gardens and attended successively the concerts by the Big Band of Nazaré County Council, the “Fado at the Piano” by Maria Ana Bobone, the Brazilian artist Maíra Freitas, the Algarve Orchestra and, at the closure of the programme, the show “Mísia – Lady of the Night”.
Throughout the day, the public viewed the several performances and visited the Palace halls, its gardens, the Museum of the Presidency and the exhibitions “Palace of Belém – Official Residence of the Head of State”, in the Gallery of Cages – Animal Patio, and “Fables – Drawings by Almada Negreiros”, in the Gallery of Nurseries – Waterfall Garden.
