The President of the Republic holds a meeting in the Palace of Belém, on Thursday 19 May, with a significant number of young farmers originating from the whole country and representing a large number of agricultural and forestry activities.
With this meeting, which will be attended by young people from all the country’s geographical regions, including the Azores and Madeira, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva intends to underline the fundamental importance of agriculture and of the rural universe, and the possibility of the sector contributing significantly towards mitigating the current economic and social crisis.
Simultaneously, the President wants to emphasize the decisive importance that young people, with their energy and creativity, can provide towards the sector’s modernization.
Advantage will also be taken from this opportunity for the President of the Republic to ascertain the young farmers’ opinion on their options for life, the difficulties they are facing and their ideas as to the future of agriculture in Portugal.
To muster the whole of Portuguese society to create conditions of sustainability and to provide a future for agriculture, for forestry and for the agro-food industry, for the collective benefit of the Portuguese, is one of President Cavaco Silva’s objectives and which will be the fulcrum of this meeting with young farmers.
