SCND meeting in the Palace of Belém
The Supreme Council for National Defence held an ordinary meeting presided by the President of the Republic.
At the end of the meeting that took place in the Palace of Belém, a communiqué was read by the Secretary to the Council, General João Goulão de Melo.
The communiqué reads as follows:
"The Council held an ordinary meeting in which, following the national procedure of ratifying International Treaties, it analysed the Government’s proposal relative to the Cooperation Agreement, in the field of Defence, with the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The Council gave a favourable view over its approval.
The Council analysed the situation of the National Armed Forces currently on Peace Missions abroad and gave a favourable view on the Government’s proposal relative to new contributions for 2011.
These contributions involve the participation, within NATO, of Armed Forces and GNR (Republican Guard) Teams, totalling 41 personnel, for training and practice of Afghanistan armed forces and police.
Also within the Alliance, the national contribution involves an Air Force Detachment with a Maritime Patrol aircraft, during two months, and a Frigate, equally for a two month period, to combat piracy along the Coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden.
In the context of the European Union, the contribution involves the command of Operation Atalanta and a Frigate during a four month period."
