Order of the Cross of Recognition
The President of the Republic received, in the Palace of Belém, the President of Latvia, Vladis Zatlers, who decorated him in a gesture of gratitude for his position in the defence of the independence of the Baltic States.
After a meeting of the two Heads of State, together with their respective Wives, President Zatlers decorated President Aníbal Cavaco Silva with the Grand Cross of the Order of Recognition.
In 1987, in the face of a concrete situation, the then Prime Minister Cavaco Silva explicitly reasserted the position of Portugal in the matter, not recognizing the policy of annexation of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union and defending the independence of those States – Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
