The President of the Republic paid tribute, in a ceremony held in the Palace of Belém, to physicians specialists in transplant operations who have achieved distinction in research and in their activity, some of whom he decorated.
With this tribute, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva also wished to underline that, in the last few decades and in the exercise of their activities, these specialists raised Portugal to a leading worldwide position in the matter of transplants.
At the ceremony, the President of the Republic awarded the insignia of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit to Prof. Doctor Joaquim Murta and to Prof. Doctor Manuel Abecasis e, also, the insignia of Commander of the Order of Merit to Dr. Manuel Teixeira and to Dr. Pedro Pimentel.
Also paid tribute to on the same occasion were Prof. Doctor Alexandre Linhares Furtado, Dr. Eduardo Barroso, Prof. Doctor João Queirós e Melo, Dr. João Rodrigues Pena, Prof. Doctor Manuel Antunes and Prof. Doctor Mário Caetano Pereira (posthumously), already previously decorated with different degrees of Portuguese Honorific Orders.
