Enactment of decree-law
The President of the Republic enacted the 2000th bill since the beginning of his mandate, a decree-law that determines the required measures to ensure the protection and the preservation of the marine environment.
When signing, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva issued a short statement in which he made reference to the remaining bills he had enacted since 2006.
Following is the text of the statement of the President of the Republic:
"I have just enacted a decree law relative to the measures required to ensure the well being of the marine environment.
This is the 2000th bill I have enacted since the beginning of my mandate, on 9 March 2006. Of these 381 were Parliamentary Bills and 1619 were Governmental Bills.
Since this is one of the main competences of the President of the Republic, the enactment of each bill demanded attentive and weighted consideration.
In the current case, the Portuguese legislator transcribed an important European directive that aims to protect and preserve the marine environment, and is considered as the environmental base of the Integrated Maritime Strategy of the European Union.
This is a community text that had a lengthy approval course, and which was given a decisive impulse during the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union.
Whilst ensuring the balance of our marine environment, we are guaranteeing that the Country will more than ever value the strategic stake that is being placed on the potential of the sea, source of economic development, of international prestige and of the people’s welfare"
