The President of the Republic attended the award ceremony of the Bial 2006 Prizes, which was held in Porto.
A paper on the treatment of diabetes with beta cells, prepared by a multidisciplinary team from the Centre for Diabetes Research, of the Brussels Free University, was awarded the Bial Grand Prize for Medicine. Prize winners were Professors Daniel Pipeleers, Bart Keymeulen and Zhidong Ling.
The Bial Prize for Clinical Medicine was awarded to the paper “Similar or different? Maternal & Infant health care for an immigrant population”, coordinated by Professor Doctor Maria do Céu Machado, from the Paediatric Department of Fernando Fonseca Hospital, in Amadora.
A further four papers submitted for assessment to the jury, presided by Professor Manuel Sobrinho Simões, of IPATIMUP, were awarded honourable status.
