The President of the Republic will visit Cape Verde, from 4 to 7 July next, accompanied by Mrs. Cavaco Silva, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, Commander Pedro Pires.

President Cavaco Silva will attend, as a guest of President Pedro Pires, the ceremonies celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Independence of Cape Verde, on 5 July 2010, after which he will commence a State Visit, on 6 and 7 July, which will include the islands of Santiago and São Vicente. The celebration of the 550th anniversary of the Discovery of the Islands of Cape Verde will also take place in 2010.

During his stay in Cape Verde, the President of the Republic will hold meetings with the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, with the Speaker of the National Parliament and with the Prime Minister. He will deliver a ceremonial speech in the National Parliament and will grant an audience to the leader of the largest opposition Party during an Extraordinary Parliamentary Meting. He will also be received in the City Councils of Praia and São Vicente and will hold meetings with other leaders and local authorities, as well as with the Portuguese community resident in Cape Verde.

Emphasizing the relevance attributed to this theme, the President of the Republic will deliver the closing address at an International Conference on the Portuguese Language, which will be held on 6 July, in the University of Cape Verde, which will be attended by a cultural deputation included in the President’s retinue, together with Cape Verde cultural individualities.

Also on 6 July, President Cavaco Silva will visit the headquarters of the Portuguese Language Cultural Institute and, jointly with the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, preside at the inaugural act of the XXV Fair of the Portuguese Book in the City of Praia. In the evening the President of the Republic of Cape Verde and Mrs. Adélia Pires will host a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva.

On 7 July, the President of the Republic will visit the re-qualification works in the Port of Praia and will then leave for the Island of S. Vicente, where he will be received in the City Council and, together with President Pedro Pires, preside at the inaugural act of a Replica of the Tower of Belém, which has recently been refurbished. The Visit will be ended with a reciprocation lunch hosted by the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva, in honour of the Head of State of Cape Verde and Mrs. Adélia Pires.

Along with the cultural deputation, the President of the Republic’s retinue will also include a group of entrepreneurs whose business include activities in Cape Verde or have shown interest in that market.
