Heriot-Watt University, of Edinburgh, Scotland, decided to institute an annual prize after the name of Prof. Doctor Aníbal Cavaco Silva to distinguish the best student in the subject of Economic Policy, in the last year of graduation in the Economics course of that University.
This subject, common to all the students taking this course, focuses upon the practical application of economic principles in the real world. Amongst the subject’s objectives is the acquisition of skills while professional consultants in economics, research and the composition of essays on current topics in economics, the curriculum being altered annually in order to take into account the changes occurring in the world.
When instituting the Aníbal Cavaco Silva Prize, Heriot-Watt University, one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the United Kingdom, considered that the subject’s contents are a reflection of the academic career and the many years of experience of the current President of the Portuguese Republic.
The first Economics student in the University to be awarded the recently instituted prize will be Kim Pieper, during the graduation ceremony to be held tomorrow, Wednesday 23 June.
Prof. Doctor Aníbal Cavaco Silva was distinguished by Heriot-Watt University with the Honoris Causa Doctor’s degree at a ceremony held in Edinburgh, on 23 June 2009.
