Meeting of CSDN
The Supreme Council for National Defence held its ordinary meeting, chaired by the President of the Republic.
At the end of the meeting, held in the Palace of Belém, a communiqué was read by the Secretary to the Council, General João Goulão de Melo.
Following is the text of the communiqué:
"The Council held its ordinary meeting and, following the national procedure of ratification of International Treaties, analysed the Government’s proposal concerning the Convention on Cluster Munitions, adopted in Dublin on 2 May 2008.
Considering that the aim of this Treaty is to put an end to the humanitarian calamity caused by that type of armament, the Council gave its favourable view as to the approval of the Convention.
The Council also analysed the situation and perspectives of the development of the peace missions in which the Armed Forces deployed abroad are involved in, and gave its favourable view to the Government’s proposal on the participation of an Armed Forces Team, with a complement of approximately fifteen members, commencing on the first quarter of the current year for a one year period, to be included in a European Union mission, in cooperation with the African Union, in the training of Somali armed forces.
