Christmas Tree on show in the Hall of Fountains
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva opened the Palace of Belém Christmas Tree in the presence of representatives from the firemen of the whole country and their families, in a tribute to their work on behalf of all the community.
Approximately one hundred and fifty firemen and members of their families arrived in the Palace of Belém to attend a party during which the “Grupo de Cavaquinhos dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Fafe” (Group of Guitar Players from Fafe Voluntary Fire Brigade) performed, and Christmas presents were distributed to the children of members of the humanitarian, voluntary and professional fire brigades.
The President of the Republic, who addressed those present, was awarded a “helmet of honour” by the President of the League of Portuguese Firemen.
Prior to this, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva recorded a video message addressed to all Portuguese firemen
In the current year, the designer of the Christmas Tree was Nini Andrade Silva, who based her work on the boxwood trees in the gardens of the Palace of Belém. The Christmas Supper Table was also opened on this day, decorated by the same designer, based upon flowers and plants from Madeira, where she was born.
The Christmas Tree and the Supper Table will remain open to the public who visit the Museum of the Presidency and the Palace of Belém until 10 January.
