Symbolic crossing of the Brandenburg Gate
The President of the Republic was received in the Berlin City Council by the City’s Burgomaster, Klaus Wowereit, who bade him welcome and hosted a reception.
The meeting was held prior to the presentation of an interactive virtual view of the city and to a session during which the President of the Republic addressed a speech.
Later, the Burgomaster led the President and Mrs. Cavaco Silva on a visit to the Brandenburg Gate, where he recounted details of the city’s history while crossing the Gate, from the Western entrance to the Eastern exit.
