President of the Republic appoints President of the Commission of the National Day of Portugal and chose the city of Santarém to host the 2009 Celebrations

The President of the Republic signed today the despatches appointing Doctor António Barreto as President of the Organizing Commission of the Celebrations of the National Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, and designated the city of Santarém as host of the 2009 Celebrations.

The President of the Republic expresses his great appreciation as to how Dr. João Bénard da Costa accomplished these duties in the last ten years.
