The Presidency of the Republic disseminates the following communiqué:
"In the last few days the media has published several items of news concerning the intentions or preferences of the President of the Republic regarding the dates of the electoral acts which will be held in 2009.
The President of the Republic wishes to make it clear to the Portuguese and especially to the political parties that such news lack any bases whatsoever.
The President of the Republic has not spoken or exchanged views with absolutely anyone concerning the subject nor has he authorized anybody to speak on his behalf, and will only do so after having consulted with the political parties represented in Parliament at the appropriate time.
It should be recalled that, in the terms of the Law, the elections for the European Parliament will be held between 4 and 7 June, the parliamentary elections will be held between 14 September and 14 October, and the local authority elections will be held between 22 September and 14 October.
As the President of the Republic stated in his New Year Message, the politicians’ agenda should be focused on the fight against the crisis that is affecting the Country and the attention of the Portuguese should not be diverted from the issues that effectively disturb them.
Palace of Belém, 11 January 2009"
