President Cavaco Silva hosts a luncheon, on 15 December, in the Palace of Belém, for Portuguese speaking heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Portugal, thus signalling the constitution of this Group and the start of its activities.

The initiative to create this group belongs to a number of Portuguese speaking Ambassadors residents in Portugal who wish to avail themselves of this bond to develop common initiatives. The Group has the High Sponsorship of the President of the Republic.

Since taking office, the President has attributed particular regard to the international valuation and assertion of the Portuguese language, a priority of the current Portuguese Presidency of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). In this context he defended, this year, before the United Nations General Meeting, the adoption of Portuguese as a UNO official language, an objective later endorsed by the CPLP Heads of State and of Government, at a meeting promoted by the President of the Republic, concurrent with the UNO General Meeting.

The process of the creation of a Portuguese speaking group of Ambassadors accredited in Portugal – now numbering more than 30 Heads of Mission – has deserved, since its beginning, the following and incentive of the President of the Republic, as the recognition, by the diplomatic community, of the current international importance of the Portuguese language.
