Museum of the Presidency of the Republic awarded “Europa Nostra - 2008” Prize

The Museum of the Presidency of the Republic received, in the United Kingdom, the European Union Heritage Prize “Europa Nostra 2008”, for the research work carried out on the tangible and intangible heritage of the Palace of Belém, which allowed the design and production of the catalogue and exhibition “Of the Palace of Belém”.

The award of the prize to the director of the Museum of the Presidency, Dr. Diogo Gaspar, took place in Durham Cathedral, United Kingdom, and was presided by Infanta D. Pilar de Borbón, President of “Europa Nostra”, and by the Director-General of Education and Culture of the European Commission, Odile Quintin.

The organizing committee stated that the “Europa Nostra” Prize was awarded to the Museum of the Presidency due to the “outstanding quality of the research project and its inestimable contribution towards the safeguard of the European cultural heritage”. The project was developed between 2003 and 2005 and was embodied with the production of the exhibition “Of the Palace of Belém” (open to the public between October 2005 and February 2006) and of a collection of seven offprints and a catalogue.

The purpose of these Works was to contribute towards the research on the current official residence of the Presidency of the Republic, providing information concerning its movable, tangible and intangible heritage, which had remained unknown for many years.

This work, under the coordination of the Director of the Museum of the Presidency, was carried out with the collaboration of reputed specialists in various areas of the History of Art: plaster; iconography, painting; sculpture; porcelain; goldsmithery; furniture. Its development was traced since its existence as a summer holiday estate used by the monarchy, until current times, when the Palace of Belém became politically relevant on becoming the official residence of the Head of State.
