Meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence

The Supreme Council for National Defence held an ordinary meeting chaired by the President of the Republic.

At the end of the meeting, held in the Palace of Belém, an Information Note was disclosed in the following terms:

“The Council held an ordinary meeting, especially to analyse the Government’s proposal on the participation of Armed Forces detachments in military operations external to national territory during 2016.

The participations to which the Council gave a favourable opinion are a set of missions with diverse features, in European, African and Middle Eastern regions, within the framework of international organizations, of NATO, the European Union and UNO, or of Bilateral and Multilateral characteristics, generally being the continuance of those that have been carried out during the current year, some of which naturally adapted to the means and operational locations. In addition to these, a naval unit will take part in a new mission, within the scope of the European Union, in the Mediterranean, in order to contribute towards the dismantlement of the clandestine migration networks in this sensitive area in Southern Europe.”
