President of the Republic sent condolences to Family of General Gabriel Espírito Santo

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of General Gabriel Espírito Santo

Following is the text of the message of condolences:

“Upon being advised of the passing away of General Gabriel Augusto do Espírito Santo, I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.

General Espírito Santo was a distinguished soldier and one of the most prestigious in his generation. Throughout his brilliant career he held highly responsible offices in the Military Institution of which stand out that of Chief of the Army General Staff and of Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff.

An exceptional soldier, with a vast culture and a captivatingly affable personality, General Espírito Santo leaves works of reference in the Fields of Strategy and Military History, areas in which he always showed great interest and which are relevant legacies for the younger military generations.

During his whole life he became distinguished by his exemplary conduct, nobleness of character, an elevated sense of State and, above all, by the notable dedication and patriotism with which he served his Country.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
