The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to Philippe, King of the Belgians, upon the passing away of the former Prime Minister Wilfried Martens.
Following is the text of the message of condolences from President Cavaco Silva;
“Majesty,
I was greatly dismayed upon receiving the news of the passing away of former Prime Minister Wilfried Martens.
On this occasion, I particularly recall the great statesman and man of convictions who, throughout the years, was driven by the care for his country, by the deepening of European integration and by the principles and values of his party. I had the privilege of working and enjoying the acquaintance of Wilfried Martens during several years, and always had great regard for his courage and personal determination.
On behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, I address Your Majesty and, in particular, the bereaved family, our feelings of deepest regret and sincere condolences.
