Granting of pardons

President of the Republic granted the traditional seasonal pardons

In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and of the current legislation, the President of the Republic received the Minister of Justice today, in order to grant the traditional pardons at this time of the year.

Requests reviewed this year numbered 225.

Following the views of the Magistrates presiding at the Penal Courts, of the Directorate General of Prisons, of the Head Officers of the Prison Establishments and of the Directorate General of Social Reinsertion, and in line with the Government’s proposals, the President of the Republic decided to grant two pardons, one concerning a prison sentence and another repealing a sentence of expulsion.

Humanitarian and social reasons were the main bases that presided at the clemency awards.

It should lastly be referred that the decisions taken over the remaining pardons requested took into consideration the unfavourable views issued, and did not fulfil the required conditions.
