President of the Republic addressed condolences to the Family of General Melo Egídio

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of General Nuno Viriato Tavares de Melo Egídio.

Following is the text of the message sent by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:

“Upon being advised of the passing away of General Nuno Viriato Tavares de Melo Egídio, I hasten to address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.

General Melo Egídio distinguished himself with a brilliant career in the Armed Forces, which led him to the high office of Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff. He also held the office of Governor of Macau and here again gave proof of his deep devotion to his Country.

His example will remain as a model of a distinguished soldier and as a public figure with a high sense of Statehood and a stamp of nobleness.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva
