To celebrate the Founding Day of the Republic, on October 5, similarly to what took place last year, the Presidency of the Republic will open the doors of the Palace of Belém to the Portuguese, and for this reason a number of events have been prepared, which include exhibitions and much music, in order to make this a day of festivities.

Visits to the Palace of Belém, starting at 10 a.m., will include an exhibition of contemporary Portuguese sculpture in the gardens of the Palace, named “Open Garden”, with works by some of the more relevant plastic artists of the moment. The exhibition, directed by Filipa Oliveira, includes works by Alberto Carneiro, Ana Jotta, Armanda Duarte, Baltazar Torres, Dalila Gonçalves, Fernanda Fragateiro, Joana Vasconcelos, João Pedro Vale, Miguel Ângelo Rocha, Miguel Branco, Pedro Barateiro, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Pedro Valdez Cardoso, Rui Chafes, Sancho Silva e Susanne Themlitz.

A further exhibition prepared for this day will show jewellery works created for the “Jewellery and National Symbols” competition launched by the Presidency of the Republic. With promotion of emerging artists as its main aim, this exhibition includes all the works entered for the competition which will be assessed by a jury presided by Mrs. Maria Cavaco Silva.

Music will be part of the show and visitors will be able to listen to the Air Force Band between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and, in the afternoon, to singers Xaile, Tiago Bettencourt, Sara Tavares, Cristina Branco and Katia Guerreiro. The latter will close the celebrations with a concert held in “Pátio dos Bichos”.

The traditional Changing of the Guard in front of the Palace of Belém will take place at 3 p.m., which the President of the Republic will attend.

The Palace closes its gates at 8 p.m. and last visitors will be allowed until 7 p.m. However, depending on the number of visitors, the queue may have to be previously closed down. For those who will not be able to come on that day, the exhibitions may be visited on week-ends until November 25.
