Since juvenile associability, due to its comprehensive approach, diversity and its performance capacity, is one of the fundamental props for civic participation of youth, it is imperative that the movement of associability should be involved in its various angles and concepts.

Cultural juvenile associability develops a relevant educational/training work in Portugal, and stimulates participation and creation in the youngest people. It performs an important role in the education for citizenry of the younger generations.

In the instances that will be visited in this Route, this type of juvenile associability performs a notable role as an agent for the socio-cultural development of the people, aiding the development of positive values in the young with participation, volunteering, solidarity, responsibility, team work, etc.

These cultural youth associations, especially those located in rural areas or away from the large urban centres, continue to be irreplaceable in the promotion of culture, corresponding as nearly as possible to the wishes and desires of their communities.

Some of the examples to be visited in this route have become fundamental nuclei of local social and cultural dynamism, rendering important services to the community. In some areas of qualitative development of cultural activity, juvenile associability is clearly predominant, as is clearly shown by the growing local influence of many of the projects led by these associations.

It is through these cultural/art associations that many youths find the opportunity to create their own life project and to participate in the construction of collective projects. It is also through these means that many of these youths open the path to their emancipation.

Cultural/art associations also perform a fundamental role with respect to social inclusion, intercultural and intergenerational conviviality. These are real schools of social learning. On the other hand they contribute towards the improvement of the quality of the life in their community, defending the interests of youth, especially those who are socially disadvantaged, collaborating in the resolution of needs and providing with “originality” alternative proposals for improving the communities.
