I am indeed very pleased to make a closer acquaintance with the Macau Polytechnic Institute. I would like to state how much I feel honoured by the fraternal hospitality with which I have been received by this academic community.
The dynamism that the Macau Polytechnic Institute attaches to its action on behalf of the Portuguese language and to cooperation with Portuguese universities is evident in the presentation we have just witnessed.
The Macau Polytechnic Institute, under the happy connection provided by its theme, ”Knowledge, Experience, Universality”, honours the uniqueness of this Territory, a uniqueness that results from the multi-secular encounter of Portuguese and Chinese cultures. Simultaneously, the several Portuguese language courses, as well as those that, covering many fields, are lectured in Portuguese, unequivocally contribute to this Institute being one of the most competitive educational institutions in the region. The Portuguese language is indisputably viewed here as an internationally growing asset of assertion, whether in areas such as economics, trade or culture, or in the new means of information and communication.
In latter years, cooperation between this Institute and the Portuguese higher education institutions has been deepened and stimulated. Important synergies were created between bodies located in two ends of the planet, but linked by a common objective: the will to cooperate, to jointly work and to dialogue in the building of a society based on knowledge.
Portuguese, with its 250 million speakers, in several continents, is a global language. In Asia, it is currently awakening a growing interest, which is not at all surprising. The Pedagogic and Scientific Portuguese Language Centre is a stake placed on the strategic value of the Portuguese language and a project in which the global object of this Institute is visibly recognized.
Macau has privileged conditions to assume itself as a regionally referenced nucleus of propagation. The Macau Polytechnic Institute has known how to exploit this potential in mutually beneficial partnerships with Portuguese higher education institutions. For this reason, I am happy to congratulate its President and this prestigious Institute and all who work here, hoping for the best of success in the pedagogic, scientific and cultural activities that are daily developed here.
