It is with great sadness that the President of the Republic, on behalf of the Portuguese people and in his own personal name, addresses his condolences upon the passing away of João Soares Louro, an enterprising citizen who stood out in the defence of the public interest and for his great managerial qualities, specially in the realms of radio and television in Portugal.

The President of the Republic sent a congratulatory message to the National Ruby Union Team, which has been qualified for the World Rugby Union Cup Final.

Following is the text of the President’s message:

Mr. President,

I was deeply shocked upon being told of the tragic consequences of an explosion occurred in a military magazine on the outskirts of Maputo.

I am extremely pleased that the Camões prize has been awarded to his literary works and hope he may carry on with the contribution that, for decades, he has given towards the prestige of the Portuguese language and literature.

On the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Ghana, an extraordinarily significant date for the whole of the continent of Africa and for the relations between peoples, I am very pleased to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the Portuguese People and in my own name, my warmest congratulations, together with wishes for the progress and prosperity of the People of Ghana.

On the occasion of Your Excellency’s re-election as President of the Republic of Senegal, I wish to address you, Mr. President, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own name, my heartiest congratulations and best wishes in the pursuance of the important duties that you have once again been called upon to accomplish.

The President of the Republic sent a congratulatory message to athlete Naide Gomes, who received a gold medal for long jump in the European Athletics Track Competitions.

Upon receiving the distressing news of the passing away of the soccer player Manuel Bento, I wish to extend to my deepest condolences to Sport Lisboa e Benfica and my feelings of profound sadness to his Family.

I was deeply desolated upon receiving the distressing news of the passing away of Her Royal Highness Princess Marie-Adelaide of Luxembourg, Aunt of Your Royal Highness.

Upon receiving the joyous news of the birth of H.R.H. Princess Lalla Kadhija, I would like to express to Your Majesty and to all the Royal Family, on behalf of the Portuguese People and personally in my own name, our heartiest congratulations and best wishes for the health and happiness of the felicitous new-born and her mother, H.R.H. Princess Lalla Salma, as well as for the prosperity of our friends the Moroccan People.
