President of the Republic sent condolences to the Family of Engineer Eduardo Pereira

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Engineer Eduardo Pereira.

Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon receiving the sad news of the passing away of Engineer Eduardo Pereira
I render the bereaved Family my very deepest condolences.

A civil engineer, Eduardo Ribeiro Pereira was noted for his sense of dedication to the public cause as Member of Parliament in several legislatures, as Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and Construction in the I Constitutional Government and, later, as Minister of Internal Administration in the IX Constitutional Government.

His knowledge of matters concerning internal security caused his opinions to be heard and respected in an area essential to the life of the Portuguese, where Eduardo Pereira always stood out in the defence of national interests and by his deep sense of Statehood.

For this reason, exactly, I had the opportunity to decorate him, in 2007, with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, in recognition of the valuable services rendered to Portugal.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
