The President of the Republic addressed a congratulatory message to the President elect of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.
Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:
“Mister President elect,
On the occasion of Your Excellency’s election as President of the Republic of Indonesia, I address you, on behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and wishes for success in the exercise of the exalted duties you have been called upon to perform.
At this time, I also wish to address my greetings to the friendly people of Indonesia for their convincing and civic participation in this electoral process, which clearly shows their adherence to the values of the Rule of Law and for the democratic maturity of Indonesia.
I recall with great pleasure the State Visit I had the honour to hold in Indonesia, in 2012. I believe that this first State Visit between Heads of State of our two countries was a true turning of the page for both of them. It was an occasion to emphasize Portugal’s firm ambition for the deepening of the dialogue and cooperation between our two countries. I am certain that, during your mandate, we will encounter renewed opportunities to forward the dynamics of the strengthening of the friendly relations that link Portugal and Indonesia, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
Renewing my congratulations, I beg you, Mister President elect, to accept my very highest regards.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
