The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Prof. Manuel Jacinto Nunes.
Following is the text of the message sent by President Cavaco Silva:
“Upon receiving the sad news of the passing away of Professor Manuel Jacinto Nunes, I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.
An exceptional academic, master of many generations, Manuel Jacinto Nunes became distinguished as one of the foremost 20th century Portuguese economists, bringing together the deepness and strictness of his knowledge with an admirable personal integrity.
Enjoying a wide humanistic culture, he presided at the Portuguese Academy of Sciences and was a member of several scientific societies, bequeathing to all who had the privilege of his acquaintance the characteristics and the recollection of the value of civility and courtesy in human relations.
Possessed of a rare ethical sense in public service, he held high offices in Government, always standing out due to his complete dedication to Portugal, specifically when he held the offices of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the IV Constitutional Government, as Governor of the Bank of Portugal and as Chairman of the State Bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
He never wished for offices or honours, or even for fame and personal greatness. He served Portugal with discretion and perspicuity, with the serene view of one that perceives reality from a higher, more knowledgeable and independent standing.
His memory must be taken as an example by all Portuguese.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
