The President of the Republic addressed a message to the President of the Republic of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, on the occasion of the Angolan National Day.
Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:
“Mister President, Dear Friend,
I am very pleased, on the occasion of the National Day of Angola, to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and sincere wishes for the prosperity of the fraternal people of Angola.
Based on sound links of friendship and cooperation, relations between our two peoples and countries are truly special. We have been able to construe a reciprocally beneficial and fruitful relationship, structured at the level of our citizens and corporations and equally at political and diplomatic levels. Throughout our common History we have been able, with mutual trust and respect, to overcome some of the difficulties arisen and continue developing close and intense relations. We have constantly wished to actively defend our bilateral relationship, deeply convinced that this is the path that better corresponds to the interest and feelings of our peoples.
On this occasion of special rejoice for the Angolan People and in the gratifying expectancy to meet you once more during the next Summit of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, in Dili, I wish to reiterate my personal endeavour on the continued deepening of our relationship, and renew my congratulations while begging you to accept my highest regards and personal esteem.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
