The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of poet António Ramos Rosa.
Following is the text of the message of condolences from President Cavaco Silva:
“Upon being advised of the passing away of António Ramos Rosa, I address the bereaved family my deepest condolences.
A major name in Portuguese culture, a unique individual in our Literature, António Ramos Rosa was distinguished as an essayist, as a translator and, above all else, as a poet.
A master in the use of words, a citizen driven in the defence of freedom, to him we owe a clear style which, due to its powerful lucidity, inspired Portuguese poetry from the second half of the 20th century until current times.
His voice, however, continues alive after being silenced by his decease. As alive as when he sang “The Clear Cry”, the title of his first book. This was followed by many others, in a vast and extensive work that notably enriched contemporary Portuguese literature.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
