The President of the Republic addressed a message of congratulations to the six young Portuguese who were awarded medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Colombia, as well as to the Portuguese Society of Mathematics, to the officers responsible for the Delphos Project, to the schools and to the families.
Following is the text of the congratulatory message from President Cavaco Silva;
“For the third consecutive year, the team of young Portuguese participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Colombia, conquered a gold medal, in addition to four bronze medals, confirming the merit and the quality of training of the students comprising the teams.
This result, obtained in a competition with 528 representatives of 97 countries, is vastly prestigious for our Country, for the Portuguese schools and for the work of the teachers’, students and families, who organized themselves and contribute, year on year, towards the renewed success of the teams that represent us in this international competition.
This is a success that deserves great applause and that was obtained at the cost of not just an enormous taste and enthusiasm for the subject of Mathematics but also, as emphasized by all the team members, much practice, much persistence and much work.
I warmly congratulate students Miguel Moreira, Miguel Santos, Luis Duarte, Francisco Andrade, David Martins and Nuno Santos, the Portuguese Society of Mathematics, to the officers responsible for the Delphos Project, as well as to the respective schools and families, wishing all of them the best of successes.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
