President Cavaco Silva sent message of condolences to Family of Professor Mário Murteira

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Professor Mário Murteira.

Following is the text of the message of condolences from President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon receiving the news of the passing away of Professor Mário Murteira, I address the bereaved family my most heartfelt condolences.

Throughout a career that lasted many decades, Mário Murteira was singled out as an academic and a citizen driven in the defence of values of peace and fairness.

As an economist and social scientist, he emphatically intervened in a global perspective of the economy, endeavouring that this should be analysed on a planetary scale and placed at the service of the total understanding of the human being.

Through a vast literary work and the teaching of many generations, his academic and civil magisterial deportment provided a relevant contribution towards a better knowledge of the Portuguese economy and society.

With the passing away of Professor Mário Murteira, the Country will miss an interceding and knowledgeable voice in the defence of social justice and harmony amongst the peoples of the world.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
