The President of the Republic addressed a congratulatory message to the Federal President of the Austrian Republic, Heinz Fischer, upon his re-election to office.

Following is the text of the message addressed by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:

"Mister President and dear Friend

Upon being advised of your expressive re-election as Federal President of the Republic of Austria I address you, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and best wishes in the performance of the high duties Your Excellency has once again been called upon to exercise.

Our countries share the same European challenge and defend a firm European Union in its objectives to guarantee peace, stability and the prosperity of its peoples. Your Excellency’s actions will be an important contribution towards enabling us to respond to the important challenges placed before the European Union and to take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered us..

I also evoke the great endeavour Your Excellency has placed in the strengthening of the relations of friendship and cooperation between our two countries and which was made very clear during the State Visit I made to Austria last July, of which I keep such pleasant memories, as well as from the many contacts we have had the opportunity to maintain throughout the last few years.

With my repeated warmest congratulations, I beg Your Excellency to accept my very best wishes for your personal well being and for the increased progress of the People of Austria.
