President congratulates alpinist João Garcia on his conquest of Annapurna

The President of the Republic addressed a message of congratulations to alpinist João Garcia who reached the summit of Annapurna today, becoming the first Portuguese to have conquered the fourteen highest mountains in the world.

Following is the text of the message addressed by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:

"When conquering today the summit of Annapurna, João Garcia has become the first Portuguese to climb the fourteen highest mountains in the world.

There is no reason to scale a mountain except the pure will to do so. Due to his will power, his persistent bravery, his enormous effort, João Garcia is a motive of pride for Portugal and an example for all Portuguese. On behalf of Portugal I wish to express my deepest recognition for this magnificent deed.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva"
