Mister President–elect,
On being advised of the results of the presidential elections held in the Republic of Guinea Bissau, I am very pleased to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our most sincere congratulations and wishes for success in the performance of the exalted duties that, so expressively, you have been called upon to assume by the fraternal People of Guinea Bissau.
The manner in which these elections were held is an unmistakable demonstration of the civic spirit of the people of Guinea Bissau and of its attachment to democracy. I am certain that Your Excellency’s mandate will be featured by the defence of the process of reform and consolidation of the institutions of Guinea Bissau, which can count on Portugal’s firm support and which is an immanent condition to ensure the future of peace and social and economic development, which is the right of the People of Guinea Bissau.
I also wish, taking advantage of this occasion, to reiterate to Your Excellency the importance I attribute to the historical bonds of deep friendship and to the continued cooperation between
Portugal and Guinea Bissau, whether bilaterally, multilaterally or very particularly within the scope of CPLP.
Renewing my congratulations, I beg you to accept my best wishes for Your Excellency’s personal well being and for the prosperity and progress of the fraternal people of Guinea Bissau.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva
