The President of the Republic addressed a message to the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, Commander Pedro Pires, regarding the enrolment of the Old City as a World Heritage Site.
Following is the text of the message:
"Mister President and Dear Friend,
I was deeply touched when advised of today’s decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to enrol the Old City as a World Heritage Site.
This decision ascribes due recognition to Cape Verde for the untiring effort it has placed in the preservation of its historical and cultural heritage. This decision, that emphasizes the value of the Old City to Humanity, is the true picture of how the preservation of the identity of a people may act as a catalyst for its own development.
For this unique distinction for all the people of Cape Verde, I wish to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
