The President of the Republic sent a congratulatory message to the President of the German Federal Republic, Horst Köhler, upon his re-election.
Following is the text of President Aníbal Cavaco Silva’s message:
"Mister President and dear Friend,
Upon the news of Your Excellency’s re-election as President of the German Federal Republic I beg you to accept, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and wishes for the greatest success in your new term of office.
Portugal and Germany share the same European future and the same vision of a European Union which asserts itself as an area of peace, stability, security and prosperity. At a time when the European Union faces such important challenges, I am certain that Your Excellency’s endeavours will greatly contribute towards our ability to benefit from the opportunities presented to us.
I also recall Your Excellency’s zeal in the strengthening of the relations of friendship and cooperation between our two countries, and the words of deep appreciation you have always seen fit to propound with regard to the many Portuguese that contribute, with their efforts, for the development and progress of Germany. A zeal which was made very clear during the State Visit I undertook to Germany last March, which I remember very fondly, as well as in the various contacts I have had the opportunity to maintain with Your Excellency.
While renewing my warmest congratulations, and looking forward to our next meeting, in Naples, I beg Your Excellency to accept my very best wishes for your personal well being and for the growing progress of the People of Germany.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva"
