President Aníbal Cavaco Silva had the opportunity to personally contact the President of the Republic of Angola, Eng. José Eduardo dos Santos, and to transmit how pleased he was with the extremely important step that the Angolan parliamentary elections meant for the consolidation of the democratic institutions of the Country, in a framework of political pluralism, and for a future of peace, prosperity and economic and social development of the Angolan People, with whom Portugal and the Portuguese feel particularly linked.
The President of the Republic enhanced the exemplary peaceful and civic minded proceedings in the electoral campaign and the high rate of adhesion of the voting process, an unequivocal sign of confidence of the Angolan people in democracy and of their belief in the future of the Country.
The President of the Republic also underlined his satisfaction for the generally positive tone with which most of the Observers’ Missions had appraised the electoral proceedings, especially those from CPLP and the European Union.
President Cavaco Silva congratulated President Eduardo dos Santos for the meaningful result achieved by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which will be undertake the responsibility, during the following legislature, to answer the expectation so positively deposited on it by the people of Angola.
