Arrival at Lajes Air
The President of the Republic commenced an official visit to the Azores Autonomous Region with a greeting to all the People of the Azores upon his arrival at Lajes Air Base, in Terceira Island.
October 5 celebrated in Belém
The President of the Republic was present at the Ceremony of the Solemn Changing of the Guard, took part in the launching of an issue of stamps with the topic “Symbols of the Republic” and watched some of the musical performances in the Palace of Belém, events which were included in the programme of the celebrations of the Day of the Founding of the Republic.
Ceremonies in Praça do Município, Lisbon
The President of the Republic took part, at Praça do Município (City Hall Square), Lisbon, in the ceremonies celebrating the Day of the Foundation of the Republic, raised the National Standard in the terrace of the City Hall and delivered a speech, after which there was a march past by the forces on parade.
Sculpture and jewellery exhibited in Belém
The President of the Republic officially opened the exhibitions “Open Garden” and “Jewellery and National Symbols”, which are on show to the public in the Palace of Belém, from the Day of the Founding of the Republic, October 5, until November 25. The President also attended a musical performance which dignified the occasion.

The President of the Republic received, in audience, the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas.
Meeting in Penha Longa, Sintra
Approximately twenty entrepreneurial leaders from all over the world and a similar number of Portuguese met in Penha Longa, Sintra, for the 2nd Meeting of the Globalization Council, an initiative of the President of the Republic.
Dinner in the Palace of Ajuda
The President of the Republic hosted a dinner, held in Ajuda National Palace, for the participants in the 2nd Meeting of the Globalization Council, as well as for the representatives of the members of COTEC – Entrepreneurial Association for Innovation and of the SME Innovation network, who took part in a debate covering “Global, Growth and Innovation Aspects”.
Annual dinner of the Journalists’ Club
The President of the Republic attended the annual dinner of the Journalists’ Club, which was held in the Ruins of the Carmo Convent in Lisbon, during which the 2006 Gazette Prizes were awarded.
Sauli Niinistö in Belém
The President of the Republic received, in audience, the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, Sauli Niinistö.

The President of the Republic received, in audience, a group of students participating in the 22nd Iberian-American Mathematics Olympics.
