Communiqué from the Presidency of the Republic

The Presidency of the Republic publishes the following communiqué:

“1. The President of the Republic granted audiences, yesterday, to the leaders of the Social Democrat Party, Dr. Pedro Passos Coelho, of the Socialist Party, Dr. António José Seguro, and of CDS-Popular Party, Dr. Paulo Portas, in order to better specify the terms of the commitment for national deliverance that, in his communiqué to the Country, he considered the better means to arrive at the resolution of the national issues, in a short and medium term basis.

The President of the Republic provided the party leaders with additional details that should materially be taken into consideration in defining the terms of the commitment.

2. The leaders of the referred parties agreed that they were ready to start holding meetings, as early as possible, in order to enable a commitment for national deliverance and to successfully complete the Programme of Financial Aid, to go back to the markets, and to guarantee the conditions of governance allowing the sustainability of the public debt, of the growth of the economy and the creation of employment.

3. The President of the Republic considers that negotiations amongst the political parties should be completed at an early date.
