With reference to news related with the commemorations of the anniversary of the founding of the Republic - 5 October – the Presidency of the Republic publishes the following communiqué:

Certain media agencies made references stating that the President of the Republic had “broken with the tradition” in respect of the commemorations of the 5th October.

The reality is the exact opposite, since the tradition followed was that of the President of the Republic not attending the ceremonies held in the seat of Lisbon County Council whenever this date coincided with the holding of local authority or Parliamentary election during the month of October. This solution was agreed, in due time, with the Mayor of Lisbon.

This took place in 2005 when the local authority elections were held on 9 October, in 1999, when Parliamentary elections were held on 10 October, and in 1991, when Parliamentary elections were held on 6 October.
