State Visit to Portugal of the President of the Chinese People’s Republic

The President of the Chinese People’s Republic, Hu Jintao, and his Wife, Liu Yongqing, will hold a State Visit to Portugal from 10 to 11 July, at the invitation of the President of the Republic.

The visit of President Hu Jintao to Portugal takes place in the year when the two countries jointly celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and when the Macau Special Administrative Region celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Portugal and China established a global strategic partnership in 2005, which has allowed the two countries to undertake a mutually beneficial cooperation in an ever widening number of fields of activity.

The visit’s official programme will commence on the afternoon of 10 July, with the laying of a wreath of flowers by President Hu Jintao, on the tomb of Luis Vaz de Camões, in the Jerónimos Monastery. President Hu Jintao and his Wife will later be received in the Palace of Belém, by the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva, followed by a working meeting between both Heads of State. The first day’s programme will end after a State Banquet in the Palace of Ajuda, hosted by the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva, in the honour of the President of the Chinese People’s Republic and his Wife.

The Official Programme for 11 July will include audiences with the Speaker of the National Parliament and with the Prime Minister, as well as a luncheon to be held in the Palace of Belém.

The President of the People’s Republic of China will bring a retinue which includes several members of the Chinese Government, as well as a deputation comprising approximately 200 Chinese entrepreneurs, who will attend an Economic Seminar to promote the strengthening of the bilateral economic and trading relations between Portugal and China, and which will be closed in the presence of the Heads of State of both countries.

President Hu Jintao will also visit the Park of Nations with the objective of directly observing the Portuguese experience in the organization of “Expo ‘98” which was dedicated to the Oceans. It is recalled that Chine will organize, in 2010 the Shanghai World Exhibition, with the theme “Urban Development with Quality of Living”.
