The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva will carry out a State Visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from 3 to 6 March next, at the invitation of President Horst Köhler, and will travel to Berlin first, then to Munich, capital of Bavaria, and later to Osnabrück, in Lower Saxony.

The President of the Republic will be accompanied by several members of the Government, amongst which the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the Political Parties represented in Parliament.

The presidential retinue will also comprise more than thirty entrepreneurs, who will take part in the economical events included in the programme, amongst which the “Germany/Portugal Entrepreneurial Meetings”, promoted by AICEP and by the Federation of the German Chambers of Commerce, in Berlin, and who will hold contacts with their German counterparts, with a view to strengthening the trading and investment relations between the two countries.

In addition to the joint programme with the German Head of State, which will include a dinner in his honour and that of Mrs. Cavaco Silva, the President of the Republic will hold a meeting, in Berlin, with Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the Speaker of the German Parliament, Norbert Lammert, and with the Burgomaster of the City-State of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit.

Still in Berlin, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva will preside at the inaugural acts of the exhibitions “Manoel de Oliveira”, dedicated to the work of the Portuguese film maker, and “Portugal beyond Portugal”, showing Portuguese contemporary architecture around the world. The presidential couple will also attend a dinner and fado concert, which are included in the international campaign promoting tourism in Portugal.

In Munich, the President of the Republic will hold a meeting with the Minister President of the State of Bavaria and will visit the head office of Siemens A.G., a company which has several important investments in our country.

In the State of Lower Saxony, the President of the Republic will visit the headquarters of Volkswagen, the company responsible for the biggest foreign investment at any time made in Portugal. After a luncheon hosted by the Mayor of Osnabrück, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva will visit the City Hall. The President of the Republic will also have the opportunity, jointly with the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, to address the young students of Ursula Schule Secondary School, in Osnabrück, on the future of Europe.

Before their return to Portugal, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva will a host a concert featuring fado songstress Kátia Guerreiro, followed by a reception, in honour of the Portuguese Community
