Palace of Belém completes installation of 126 photovoltaic panels to reduce energy bill and CO2 emissions

The Presidency of the Republic has completed the installation of 126 photovoltaic panels with the objective to reduce the energy bill and CO2 emissions in the Palace of Belém, a system which already allows the coverage of 15% of the Presidency’s electric power usage.

Following the Energy Audit Report on the Palace of Belém, requested by the President of the Republic, and the Measures of Energy Efficiency announced in January 2008, with the objective to reduce the energy bill by 40% and CO2 emissions by 30% in the Palace of Belém, the installation of 126 photovoltaic panels has been completed, and will supply approximately 20 kW of solar photovoltaic power.

With an estimated annual production capacity of 30,152 KWp, the photovoltaic system installed will cover approximately 15% of electric power consumed by the Presidency of the Republic.

This installation is added to other measures already developed amongst those foreseen for the purpose of obtaining energy efficiency and environmental protection, of which the main are:

           • Thermal insulation of the roofs of the buildings and of the heating and air conditioning pipes;
           • Replacement of the internal and external lighting equipment by more efficient systems;
           • Replacement and alteration of the operation of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems;
           • Conversion of diesel consumption to natural gas;
           • Repair of the existing natural gas boilers

The new equipment and the already completed alterations fulfil the plan of energy optimization carried out in 2008, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 200 tonnes and contributing significantly towards the reduction of the energy bill.
