Tribute paid in the Former City Council
In a formal act which took place in the former Viana do Castelo City Council, the President of the Republic was honoured with a Ceremonial Welcome, marking the holding in the city of the Celebrations of the National Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
Welcomed in Praça da República, in the city centre, with military honours, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva assisted at the raising of the National Standard, unveiled a commemorative plaque, officially opened an exhibition of Portuguese Honourable Orders and attended a ceremony in which the Mayor of Viana do Castelo, Defensor Moura, wished him welcome. The Head of State addressed a speech on the occasion.
The President walked on his way to Praça da República, during which he was greeted by the many people present, and viewed the works of young finalists of the Lisbon Faculty of Fine Arts presented in the city streets in an exhibition named “Out of Place”.
