Museum of the Presidency of the Republic awarded with the European Prize “Europa Nostra - 2008”

The Museum of the Presidency of the Republic was distinguished with the European Union Cultural Heritage Prize “Europa Nostra 2008”, for research work carried out on the material and intangible heritage of the Palace of Belém, which permitted the concept and production of the exhibition and the catalogue “Of the Palace of Belém”.

The award ceremony will take place on next June 12, in Durham Cathedral, in the United Kingdom, and will be presided by Infanta D. Pilar de Borbón, President of “Europa Nostra”, and by the Director-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission, Odile Quintin. The prize will be received by Dr. Diogo Gaspar, director of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic.

According to the organizing committee, the “Europa Nostra” Prize was attributed to the Museum of the Presidency due the “exceptional quality of the research project and its inestimable contribution towards the safeguard of the cultural heritage of Europe”.

This is the second prize (after the 2006 José de Fingered Prize, of the National Academy of Fine Arts) awarded to the research project developed between 2003 and 2005, which was materialized with the production of the exhibition “Of the Palace of Belém” (open to the public between October 2005 and February 2006) and with a collection of seven offprints and a catalogue.

These works had the aim to contribute towards the planning of the current official residence of the President of the Republic, availing information of its movable, fixed and intangible heritage, which had remained unknown during many years.

This work, coordinated by the Director of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, had the cooperation of reputed experts in various areas of History of Art: stuccoes; iconography; painting; sculpture; porcelain; goldsmith; furniture. Its development was traced since its role as a summer residence during the monarchy, until the current time, when the Palace of Belém acquired an important political role as the official residence of the Head of State.

The seven offprints, as a complement of the catalogue, allow the segmented reading about the collections in the Palace of Belém, and are grouped as follows: “Gold artefacts and porcelain”; “Tiles, ceilings and stuccoes”; “Architecture”; Gardens and sculptures”; “Living experience, location and iconography of Belém”; “Painting and furniture”; “Belém riding school”.
